If Why do so many people struggle with stress, illness, depression, melancholy and unhappiness?
All of these prevent us from performing at our best and affect our results.
The natural state of the human is to be happy, energetic and a glowing force of life.
We don’t come into this world feeling anxious, hatred, anger, sad and unhappy but many people end up that way. It all comes down to how we perceive things and the meaning we give to them. Basically it’s how we are programmed as humans.
As we start out in life, we absorb all the information and energy surrounding us, whether that be positive or negative and continue to do so until around the age of 7. By then much of our programming will have come from our parents and grandparents, family, religion, tv, radio and other media sources that shape our lives and how we view things.
The same applies with how we feel about things and the labels we give them. A friend who lives in NY was telling a story about how just after the hurricane that hit NY a couple of years back, she saw a dog running don her street with a rooster in its mouth. She told her friends what she saw and thought is was so funny. I didn’t really agree and told her I felt sorry for the poor old rooster.
She then mentioned it was how I was looking at the situation and the meaning I gave to it, which were completely different from the way she looked at it. Or for that matter how the dog viewed it!
Initially I didn't quite get this but as she explained that the dog didn’t see it as bad, he merely saw the rooster as food. Once I looked at it from a different angle, it became much less harsh. It was simply the way I had been viewing it and the meaning I gave to the situation that dictated the way I felt about it all and this changed when I looked at it from the dogs perspective.
Or put another way I thought ‘bad dog – poor rooster’. Whereas the dog was thinking ‘good rooster’.
Crazy maybe, but if we are viewing so many things in life in a certain way and giving negative meanings to them this can adversely affect the way we feel.
So, what can we do about it?
By changing the meaning we give to things is a simple and effective way to start which can help shift our point of view away from something as negative or bad or stressful, which many of us now know that through studies that stress is the biggest cause of disease and health problems to humans.
Start to look at things in a different way and think them over for a minute or so and ask yourself what thoughts come to mind. Then ask yourself is there another way to actually see things?
It may just help you to become healthier, happier and more productive.
